Having trust, competency, and confidence in your abilities are very important in your work and personal life. Having too much of an ego comes from a place of being “better than others.” I think it’s a very unhealthy place to come from especially in the working world.

TOO MUCH EGO CAN SHUT THE DOORS TO LEARNING MORE

There is a big difference between having a level of pride in your work vs. coming off as a “know it all.” People want to work and build relationships with people who they can grow with and like to be around. Ego is not a sustainable strategy to create long term success. Humility on the other hand; keeps you open minded, evolving, and willing to learn more.

YOU CAN STILL BE HUMBLE AND HAVE HEALTHY BOUNDARIES

I think sometimes people can think being humble is associated with being walked all over… I strong disagree, you can still be humble and have healthy boundaries. A mix of not being a show off and having a set of rules of what you are willing to accept from others is a great balance.

STRENGTHENING YOUR CHARACTER

I believe having humility will strengthen your character. You can take a step back and have more perspective of what you need to work on in terms your craft, and the way you’re coming across. Right now more than ever; the value of being kind, listening, and putting positive energy into the world is more important than ever. Your colleagues and friends will start to notice the improvement in the way you’re showing up when you adopt these mindsets.

LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS AS WELL

I am by no means downplaying looking out for yourself. I believe when you look out for others as well, it is good karma. Check in with friends you haven’t spoke to in a while, send a genuine note to an old colleague to see how they are, without asking for anything. These actions will train you that when you show care for others, they will show care for you. My uncle has this saying “to have friends, you need to a good friend.” It took me a while for this to sink in, this is true in any area in life, including your work.

USING HUMILITY AS A WAY TO DEVELOP SKILLS

This goes back to my first of having a mindset of not being a know it all; you can use humility as a way to develop skills, move forward in areas you need to work on, and excel in life. I have seen friends of mine do this, and make huge improvements in their finances and personal life by doing this!

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE

Finally, when you implement these values, you adopt a whole new perspective on life. You are able to have an outlook that is positive, caring, helpful, and moves society forward. It’s truly a beautiful thing that can create synergy in relationships both personally and professionally.
